Praia das Rocas is a water park and swimming pool complex located in Castanheira de Pera, near Coimbra, Portugal. The park is set on a lake with nearly 1 km long surrounded by mountains and lots of trees, a reservoir and a secular bridge. The clear waters of Ribeira de Pera overflow, forming a charm where tropical palms coexist harmoniously with the Serra da Lousã peering from above. In 2017 there were a huge forest fire and more than 60 people died on the roads leading to the park and both park and city aren’t yet fully recovered.
The main attraction is the wave pool with 2100 m2 just like the park slogan suggests “Waves 80km away from the sea!”. Our group have been in many wave pools in Europe and the United Stated and this one of the largest and intense experiences we’ve ever had: large pool, strong waves, the profundity of more than 2 meters at the deepest point, waves hourly timed and lots of live savers to keep you safe. Top notch wave pool!
In Praia das Rocas visitors can also enjoy rappel and, rent a canoe and row in an 1 km fluvial lake or stay overnight in one of the six bungalows on the shore of the reservoir, with a privileged view of the huge mirror of water.
On the downside, there are only a small number of sunbeds but you meed to pay for those separately, the paving is slippery and the car park is free but tiny. Also, there is only one bar and it is always crowded and no food is allowed from the outside so meal arrangements could be tricky.
Fortunately, this water park inexpensive, adults pay €10 on weekdays and €11 on weekends, plus another €9 for sunbeds and €5 to do the additional activities such as canoeing or gliding down a highwire.
A hidden paradise 80 km from the Portuguese coast to visit with family and friends.
