Alton Towers attracts around 2.7 million visitors per year making it the most visited theme park in the United Kingdom;and one of the family oriented best parks in the world. 2015 attendance droped for the first time ina decade to 1,925,000 due to The Swarm accident) . The park opened in 1980 and is located in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire;161 miles from London.
The park is set in the grounds of the historic mansion that gives its name. The sights are magnificent: when arriving by car you’ll enjoy Britain’s countryside and the park has a beautiful lake and elaborate gardens.
Alton Towers theme park is divided into 13 themed areas: Towers Street, Mutiny Bay, Katanga Canyon, Gloomy Wood, Forbidden Valley, Dark Forest, Cloud Cuckoo Land, X-Sector, Adventure Land, Storybook Land, Old MacDonald´s Farm, The Towers and The Gardens; and has with a wide range of attractions from top-ten steel coasters (Oblivion, Air, Rita and original Nemesis) and 3 excellent dark rides (Th13teen, Nemesis Sub Terra and The Smiler – new for 2013 that beat the word record for the inversions on a single ride, 14. The ride has several problems since its inception and a major accident occurred in June 2015).
In May 2014 opened CBeebies Land that features attractions for the popular TV Series such as Something Special, In the Night Garden and Postman Pat. For 2016 the park plans to open Galactica the world’s first virtual reality dedicated roller coaster (formerly known as Air) and in 2018 there are plans for a new rollercoaster codenamed Sw8.
We spent one day in the park during April 2011 and had a fantastic time. The main attraction was by the time Thirteen especially the part when after the ride is almost complete the train drops vertically by (we’re guessing) 15-20 feet and rolls back. Fantastic experience!!!.
As the park itself is in the middle of the country side so I would strongly suggest taking a car if possible as the bus links are few and far between and local taxis will come cheap. We went by train from London to Stoke-on-Trent and had to pay 25 pounds for a taxi. Also, we suggest you to book to book ahead online to avoid the lines and also to get considerable discounts (for us two tickets for the price of one in Facebook fan page). The park opens from March to November but has special events during Christmas and Halloween season. Also there’s usually a stage by the lake with some of the most famous UK pop stars and DJs stopping by for memorable performances and sets.
