Tokyo DisneySea theme park is located in Urayasu, Chiba, Japan, just outside Tokyo. The park that opened in September 2000 is considered by most critics and bloggers as the most beautiful theme park in the world. Tokyo DisneySea attracted more than 13 million visitors in 2015, making it the fifth most visited theme park in the world. Tokyo DisneySea is also the most expensive theme park ever built, estimated to have cost over U.S. $4 billion.
The park themed areas all related to the sea or water: Mediterranean Harbor (“Main Street”), American Waterfront (seaside America from New York to New England in the early 20th century), Port Discovery (a “Tomorrowland” of sorts), Lost River Delta (the jungles of Central and South America), Mermaid Lagoon (a dry “undersea” area for kids themed to The Little Mermaid), Arabian Coast (the time of Sindbad the Sailor), and Mysterious Island (the world of Captain Nemo).
Aside from the Tower of Terror (which can also be found at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s California Adventure, and Walt Disney Studios Paris) in American Waterfront and the Indiana Jones Adventure (which can also be found at the original Disneyland in California), all of the attractions in DisneySea are unique to Japan. The highlights on the park are Mount Prometheus volcano, Journey to the Center of the Earth, a unique ride where you descend towards the “center of the earth”, spiraling through atmospheric caves, surrounded by fantasy animals and backed by a soundtrack that you will be humming for days after, Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull and The Tower of Terror.
It’s a clean and nicely set out park, with staff who seem genuinely happy to be there and happy to help. The parks biggest issue are the long lines with two hours average waiting time for each ride. Fortunately the park’s website tells you how crowded each day is and you could buy a fast pass.
Tokyo DisneySea is a beautiful theme park and has different feel from the typical Disneyland one would expect.
