Knoebels is very difficult to describe and not you expect from a theme park. It’s located in the middle of nowhere in rural Pennsylvania. It’s a farmers market and a funfair. It’s old and new. It’s large and cosy. It’s outdated and mainstream. All at once.
People come here to have a good time. To eat and drink as a family and to have a good time with the kids on the rides. You don’t find large, exciting world-class roller coaster or groundbreaking technological rides. One of the main attractions here a 1913 carousel. You get the picture.
One defining mark of the park is its gratuity. Knoebels markets itself as America’s largest free-admission park for 90 years of operation.
In fact, the park opened in 1926 and originally was known as “Peggy’s Farm” with only a merry-go-round that was on loan, a pool and a few food stands. Before that the Rev. Henry Hartman Knoebel bought the property in 1829 for $931 and at first, the family used it for farming and lumbering.
Now has more than 60 rides, three wooden roller coasters, one steel roller coaster, the previously mentioned 1913 carousel, and a haunted house dark ride. The only thrill ride is 2015’s Impulse, A Zierer steel coaster with a high-hat initial rise to 98 feet (30 m), and a cobra roll, a vertical inversion and a zero g roll. Nothing fancy but fun nonetheless. Knoebels also has hundreds of small tents from farmers and craftsmen and food and beverage stalls; all pilled in very small spaces and with nice people to receive you and engage in a conversation. Not surprisingly Knobles was elected in 2016 has best traditional amusement park by members of the National Amusement Park Historical Association.
Relaxed atmosphere but huge crowds. He visited on a Friday morning in October 2017. Arrived after a long road trip from New York and the huge parking lot was full in no time. Thousands flock each day to this 90-year-old gem for its food, cleanliness, and good value.
