Located in Kaatsheuvel in The Netherlands, Efteling (De Efteling) is Netherlands largest theme park currently covers approximately 160 acres (650,000 m²) and one of the oldest theme parks in the world
The park founded in the 50’s is one of the most wonderful places we’ve ever visited (see old pictures from the park 1, 2). Everything here is surprising. Most rides are even produced by the park’s company so you wont find them anywhere else in the world. To visit Efteling is a magical experience because the park is themed on a fairy tale world full of wondrous tales, delightful dreams and adventures at high speed. We almost forget everything else for a while and take the leading role in the adventure.
One of the main areas of the park is themed Fairytales Forest where a number of well-known fairy tales inspired by the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Charles Perrault come to life.
We visited the park back in December 2011, between Christmas and New Year. Even with the freezing temperatures, you can embrace the magic and believe in fairy tales for a day and having fun in the some of the best dark rides in the world, including Droomvlucht, Vogel Rok and The Flying Dutchman. Then we visited again in the summer of 2015 for the opening of world class roller coaster Baron 1989.
In between visits the park premiered Aquanura, a Musical Fountain show (with music by dutch dj Tiësto) and The Emperor’s New Clothes, a new Fairy Tale added to the Fairy Tale Forest.
The park also has several thrilling rides. One of the greatest wooden rollercoaster is the Joris en de Draak (see photo). The roller coaster has a capacity of 1.750 people per hour. Both tracks are 810 meters long and the maximum speed is 75 km per hour. The highest point of the roller coaster is 25 meters. The ride has two different scenarios, one with water and the other with fire, and the rides always compete to each other, as the red and blue teams, what gives the ride a lot of fun and interaction with the other train. Wonderful to ride in the night.
The Bobsleigh Run ‘Bobbaan’ is one of my favorites bobsleigh in the world. I personally like not being stuck to the tracks, so this is always a good way to have fun for all family. If I get there again, I will have to try the hot wine they sell. Seems popular enough to take the risk.
In 2015 the park opened Baron 1989 a world-class dive coaster with a drop of 39,5 meters and music created by the Brussels Philharmonie symphony orchestra under the direction of René Merkelbach. The ride is themed on Gustave Hooghmoed, a man finds a nugget of gold in the mine and buys the whole area of land to secure for himself the mine. He starts calling himself the “Mine Baron” and recrutes miners to dig for the gold. One by one, the miners flee from the mine and not a single one manages to stay for long.
In sum, Efteling ranks in my favorites parks in the world and definatly worth’s a visit.
