World of Discoveries is a mini indoor theme park and interactive museum located in Oporto Portugal. The park opened to the public on April 25, 2014, representing an investment of 8 million euros and its owned by a private company.
With 5,000 square meters, the museum has thematic rooms showing the evolution of vessels, navigation instruments and cartography. Located near the Douro river the park includes a river boat ride that re-enacts the fantastic odyssey of the Portuguese navigators, crossing oceans to discover a previously unknown world.
When we visit in 2016 it took us no more than 2 hours to know each corner of the park very well escorted by guides dressed in the fifteenth century.
The park also has very good restaurant on the top floor where you can try out exotic delicacies and delicious food from Portugal, Africa, India, China, Japan and Brazil.
The museum space has a navigable area with replicas of small boats where the sea lanes pioneered by the Portuguese are recreated, with passage through China, Japan, Indonesia, India, North Africa and Brazil.
All in all World of Discoveries is a good brief stop if you visit Oporto and want to know more about the Portuguese role in Ages of Discoveries.
