Aldeia da Terra (The Earth Village) is a small theme park located in Arraiolos in the countryside of Portugal.
The project consists of miniature cartoons in clay 4000 caricatures that represent everyday life in the most diverse areas, people, jobs, habits (including international statesmen like the former President Obama). The park and is self financed project of craftsmen Tiago Cabeça and Magda Ventura, which for over 17 years has been accumulating awards and distinctions. It is considered the most peculiar village in Portugal.
We visited in the Spring of 2015 and the visit took no more than 1 hour minutes at the most. We found the clay caricatures very interesting and spiced with sense of humor. 2 adult tickets € 10 and 1 child ticket € 3 is slightly inflated but the sympathy of the owners that received us very well was rewarding. You can also work the clay and take your masterpiece home.
The only downside is the lack of shades because in the heat of Alentejo transforms a pleasant walk into a nightmare. Mostly in the afternoon. Hat and water are essential. Also restaurant or a coffee shop would be ideal in this fantastic space with stunning views over the castle of Arraiolos.
Not to be missed if you travel between Portugal and Spain by car.
