Selwo Aventura is a wildlife park, located in the Andalusian town of Estepona, Malaga, Spain (just by the famous A7 Costa del Sol motorway).
The park covers an area of 100 hectares (including several hills to climb) and houses more than 2,000 animals of different species from all continents, such as lions, cheetahs, elephants, hippopotamus, zebras or Iberian lynx. Selwo Aventura also offers leisure activities such as hanging bridges, camel rides, zip line and archery. In addition it features children’s educational and recreational classroom and a hotel and lodging cabins inside the park.
For us the highlights included the bird kingdom with suspended rope bridges and the Lemur enclosure where we actually got to stroke and play with the Lemurs. But on the downside: (i) some of the enclosures provide little shade or comfort for the larger animals (for instance the elephants seem depressed) ; and (ii) the truck safari rides around the park look great but are now an optional and expensive extra (15€ per rider, more than the discounted tickets for the park that you can find online from 12€!!!). The camel ride is also an extra. And then €3 for the privilege of parking. Seems like in this park everything is overpriced and everything costs extra!
Selwo Aventura on a hot Spanish summer day could be a very hard experience. Whilst there are water sprays along the walkways, be aware that much of the walking is exposed to what can be blistering heat and one section is a long steep ‘march’ though with only occasional shaded benches. Fortunately, there’s a nice eating area overlooking a beautiful lake with Monkeys swinging around on a central island and a suspended bridge with access to the zipline. But again the usual overpriced fast food and no pic nic area or food from the outside is allowed.
We visited in July 2015 and took us approx. 4 hours to see the whole park even with 34 degree Celsius. So reserve only part of the day, preferably the morning during summertime. For instance go to Zoo in Fuengirola or Selwo Marina in the afternoon.
Overall, we felt this was a rather expensive afternoon for the experience we got… and would not rush to come back.
