Nordens Ark (Ark of the North) is a wildlife theme park located on the 383-hectare (950-acre) in Bohuslän, on the west coast of Sweden, not too far from the border to Norway. The park brands itself as sanctuary for animals threatened from extinction and has a policy of release into the wild animal bread on the park, including the white stork, eagle owl, bell frog, otter, European wildcat, and lynx. Nordens Ark is a non-profit foundation so by visiting the park, you are supporting efforts to save endangered animals. Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, was appointed as Nordens Ark Supreme Protector in 1989.
The space is gorgeous and is a great place to spend a whole afternoon at. The animals have very large spaces to live on so it happens that you might not see all of them. It’s a large park good for forest exploration and hill climbing by the Åbyfjord, a typical Swedish West Coast fjord. So pack yourself a picnic or eat at the cafeteria. Prepare yourself for a long walk in the forest.
Nordens Arc has various arctic goats, tigers, wolves and other animals found in the northern hemisphere in the wild. Even two pandas and an educational farm good for children. Nordens Ark is open for visitors every day all year round and hosts about 100,000 visitors every year.
We visited in June 2014 driving from Gotemborg on a glorious spring morning and had a wonderful walk through nature with the added bonus of myriads of wildlife!. It was only our second visit to Scandinavia but i can say with confidence that the park is better to be visited in late Autumn/Early Spring as one sees more animals thanks to less foliage. The tiger area and the search for the shy wolves were the highlights of our visit. And the pandas always makes the children happy (even a kid with 44 like me…)
Park entrance is reasonable at 230 SEK (25€) but the park closes early in the afternoon even during summer time.
Would thoroughly recommend a visit!
