Monte Selvagem is a wild life park located in Portugal, Vendas Novas, between the settlements of Lavre and Ciborro. The park founded in May 8th 2004 has about 20 hectares where you can see about 400 animals of 70 species of wildlife on the loose, including monkeys, camels, crocodiles, ostriches and zebras. In 2014 the park turns 10 years and passed the 500.000 visitors mark.
The park is ideal for long walks between cork oaks and holm oaks typical of Alentejo and for learning activities for kids, because there are many games around the park that test our knowledge of animal life. The park has also tree houses, where we can enter, a slide and swings with tires that delights the youngest. It also has an animal farm with chickens, sheep, goats and many other animals (see photo). The major rides are a Safari tractor visit that runs for about 30 minutes and giant trampoline that allowed the whole family to have fun (see video).
The reception is quite funny all made of wood which and runs a souvenir shop. The entrance ticket is not too expensive (13€/adult) and there are some discounts. You don’t need to wait in line and the park has a picnic area which enables families to bring lunch to eat there. There is also a small restaurant. Finally you don’t need a full day for a visit, only 3/4 hours.
We visited in April 2013 and especially liked the safari itself, that was quite pleasant and give us a chance to see many animals in the wild. But the ride was delayed a little bit and we had to wait for 15 minutes for the guide. Minor inconvenience in a calm and restful afternoon.
